Untersbergbahn from Salzburg

Not a good nights sleep – only 3 of us in the room but 2 of them were up and around at 2am. I couldn’t get back to sleep for ages. This is only the second time that’s happened this trip so that’s not too bad. I’ve been away three weeks now.

Today I have travelled to Untersberg to take the cable car up to the top. It’s right on the German border. The cable car ride was pretty exciting especially on a part where the ride goes over a mini peak to reveal a vast valley and drop on the other side. Everyone in the carriage gasped.

At the top it was a short walk to the very top and I always enjoy looking at views like this:

As I queued to go back down an announcement was made that the cable car would be suspended because of windy weather. It was lunchtime so I popped in the cafe for a reasonably priced Wiener schnitzel and chips (EU10.50) and here I still am almost an hour later. I think I’m going to miss my walking tour at 2pm.

Update: the cable car stopped for about 90 minutes. So in the end I got to the tour late but carried on with them. It was good and I learned quite a few things about buildings I have been walking past blindly…

Can you guess what kinds of shops these are the signs for?

Yes – this is the McDonalds sign on Getreidegasse
Smallest house in Austria

I also learned a bit more about the Prince – Archbishop whose residence I visited yesterday. It seems he got married (even though he was a catholic priest) and had lots of children!!

The evening saw my second concert of the Salzburg Festival and it featured the Mozart Requiem among other works.

Felsenreitschule – converted riding school apparently. Now a wonderful concert hall.

I really enjoyed it! Although I was a bit confused over what was what. They performed without applause gaps which I really liked and there were readings (in German) and offstage plainchant at certain points. I really enjoyed the Ligeti too – evocative.

Programme

It had started raining again afterwards so I walked home in the rain. This is not unenjoyable – I quite like the sensation! See you soon!

  1. Yet another stunning view- you are visiting some truly beautiful places this holiday. Glad they stopped the cable car in the wind even if it did make everything else late- would be a bit scary in high wind!
