Introducing Myself

Hello everyone. I am Rachel and I am about to embark on my first ever Interrail trip!

I am 53 years old and will be travelling solo. Travelling like this has always appealed to me yet I have never had the opportunity.

Walking in the lakes

This year however the interrail trip is solving a problem for me. The problem is – how do I spend my summer.

As an international teacher in Bangkok, I have 6 weeks holiday in the summer. Most of my friends and colleagues leave the country to visit family back home or go on holiday. If I stayed in Bangkok during the summer I would not have anyone around to see for most of the six weeks. In the past, as my children grew, I would spend more time with my ageing father in the UK and certainly his house was always my base. Now he has died and I am separated from my husband, I need to find a way to enjoy my summer. I want to visit my children in London but no-one wants a relative staying for 6 weeks… I will visit my brother/cousins at some point but again will not stay too long.

So I have decided to interrail. I hope it will be cheap enough that I can manage okay. I hope I can see places and things that will be interesting. I hope I enjoy the mix of solitude but meeting people. I’m happy that some family/friends will join me for a few days in different places.

So this is my way of ‘owning’ the holiday and making it manageable and enjoyable. If I enjoy this year’s trip then I can try it again in the future.

As a solo traveler especially, I need to be mindful of personal safety so I will not be posting dates or exact locations live. Friends/family – if you want more info or want to join me for a few days, drop me a personal message.

I’d love to hear from you!!

    Hi Rachel,
That looks like an amazing project!
I saw you would be going to Bruges. When would that be? Nothing is ever far in Belgium! 😉 We live south-east of Brussels in Gembloux… easy to reach by train. Just let me know if we have a chance to meet. Depending on when you plan to be in Belgium, you are welcome to stay with us.

    1. Hi Colette,
So nice to hear from you! I’d love to see you!
I will actually be in Brussels on July 3rd arriving at midday and leaving at 7.30pm. Fancy some late lunch or early dinner? Sounds like I could easily get a train to Gembloux?
Bruges is on the way back at the end of the month 27-29th July. Arrival in Bruges not yet fixed but Friday morning and leaving Sunday morning! Chris and Aimee will be joining me there too.
Would love to see you and catch up – does any of this work for you?

      1. Hi Rachel,
Unfortunately we are away end of June … coming back on July 4, which means missing you by a day! … but the end of July works well.
Not sure about tour plans but we could could accommodate the three of you. Just let me know.
Do you know Sasi will be staying with me from July 6 to 13?

  3. Hi Rachel
Great blog! Interesting as we start to plan a little trip around Germany.
Also…. Hitting my WordPress curiosity button…. I’ve always fancied dabbling with that and your blog has tipped me over the edge! Thanks 😊
We had negative vibes from our one short visit to Innsbruck but now I feel we should give it a second chance.
Enjoying the variety of your topics, something to aim for….
    Kind regards, Andy
