Casual day in Linz

I arrived in Linz around lunchtime but my sleeper train wasn’t due until 9pm so I had 9 hours to fill.

In fact I had done this on purpose: instead of returning back to Vienna for the train, I thought it would be fun to hang out in a new place for the day.

Linz is pretty laid back. It reminds me of Manchester with the trams, the apparent size and the same level of busyness.

The first thing I did was buy a day transport pass using the ‘Linz Mobil’ app. EU5.40 for the day. I had to properly register in the app which was a bit of a faff but fine.

Then I did three main things.

1. Visited the mariandom- very large Gothic cathedral with so, so many stained glass windows. I’ve never seen so many.

2. Tried Linzer torte at the ‘original’ cafe – had to be done! Yum yum. This was just off Hauptplatz.

3. Went up Postlingberg hill on the funicular tram. Wonderful views and a nice church at the top. A fun ride up and down too. Take the tram number 50 from Hauptplatz. I already had a day pass so it didn’t cost me anything.

Apart from these main things, I had a walk around the town, sat in a park and ate my Spar salad and sandwich and did a bit of window shopping! I’m glad I had the ‘stop-over’!

      1. Not exactly sure yet but probably Eastern Europe. I’d be interested to know how you’ve found hostel accommodation as an older person. Hope that doesn’t sound too rude 😬

      2. I’ve found it fine to be honest. There are other older people around, but mostly younger people who are friendly. I’ve not had any problems with partying people, but I have had a couple of broken nights with people coming in late etc. I would deffo do this again but I think it depends on individuals!

  4. Thanks. It’s something I’m considering but as I haven’t stayed in a hostel since my teens I’m keen to hear of other peoples experiences 😊
