Train to Innsbruck – wrong ticket

Leisurely journey from Bratislava and connection onto Innsbruck train in Vienna. I treated myself to a business class upgrade for EU15. Nice big, reclining seat and plenty of room.

Business/class
Lovely big window

UPDATE: It seems that I have bought an upgrade but I don’t have the right ticket to qualify for it!!

This is how I made the mistake:

I had decided to reserve a seat for this service just in case it was busy. As I was reserving, I was given the option to upgrade as below:

Normal reservation EU3

But when I clicked for the Business Class upgrade both 1st and business are highlighted.

Business class upgrade EU15 – I thought

Anyhow it seems that the Business class upgrade is from 1st class to Business Class. And I only have a second class ticket.

That’s not clear in the purchase screen – I thought I was buying an upgrade from normal to business.

It turns out that Business is higher than first class and you need a first class ticket to upgrade to business.

The inspector noticed this and said she would ask her colleague to come and see.

I was expecting a fine, or to at least have to pay for the first class ticket.

The other inspector came and by then I had figured out what I had done. I apologized and asked what I should do. I explained what I thought I had done – and he decided to let me off!

Lovely man – I was very relieved! A real ‘pay it forward’ moment.

So I continued in my wonderful business class seat! Arrival into Innsbruck was smooth – lots of tunnels as we came over the border from Germany.

Beautiful views but not translated well into pics:

15 min walk to my hostel – Meininger Zentrum. Seems nice – very small room for 4 people – 2 x twin beds and 1 x bunk beds. Guess who’s on top? 😂😂😂😳😳😳

Came straight out to do my laundry as I don’t want to waste the morning tomorrow!

See you soon

Bloody loving your blog Rachel, I’m heading to Germany in September and have decided to use Meininger Hotels for my accommodation. How was the breakfast?

      1. Oh gosh – that’s so kind of you to say! Re Meininger, I am not having the breakfast. From what I saw this morning it was cold meats, cheese, bread etc. I’ll try to take some pics tomorrow morning. Also there is a kitchen to cook things (with pots/pans I believe) and there is crockery to use. Also a fridge! I have taken pics and will try to put in blog tomorrow or next day. Room is very small but fine! Where in Germany are you going?

Thanks for the information Rachel, I’m a Geeky Family Historian and I’m in search of my Great Grandmother birth place & her parents.

Im going to be travelling mostly around Lower Saxony. First stop Bremen, then on to Bremervörde. Hamburg, Hanover down to Cologne and then home. 👍✔️

Innsbruck looks gorgeous. So does the business class seat, but what’s with the precariously slung reading material?
