Vienna – last day or so

I forgot one place on my last blog post: I had already been to Hundertwasser Haus.

Hundertwasser Haus

It was quite interesting but a bit tired and un-noteworthy. I found a leafy square to sit on nearby and had a supermarket sandwich for lunch.

Griechenbeisl

From there I got on the tram intending to go to the Museumsquartier and see what I fancied. However I got off the tram at Swedensplatz to enquire about a boat to Bratislava (EU43 – I decided not). From there I spotted some medieval looking buildings and decided to go look.

They did look medieval – honest!

After wandering around, I sat for a beer in the place just at the other side of the pic. It turns out it is the oldest restaurant in Vienna and was the hang out of Mozart/Beethoven back in the day. On the wall of the oldest room they have are many musicians signatures: Mozart, Beethoven, Mahler, Brahms, Wagner ++++

I was stoked to have stumbled on this place (Griechenbeisl) but wouldn’t have known anything if I hadn’t struck up conversation with the person next to me who filled me in. Goes to show that taking that first step really does pay off!

Porgy & Bess

I decided to venture to Porgy & Bess jazz club and bought a rather expensive EU28 for a visiting jazz trio – Karl Ratzer Trio. Food was okay, nice drinks and musicians were clearly amazing. It wasn’t a genre I’m very experienced in but I enjoyed nonetheless.

I was very pleased to be sat with Wendy and Hans who were great company. I was also very happy to meet Rene, who has shared so many tips with me. Thank you Rene!

Late night – nearly midnight when I got back!

Day 4 in Vienna – last day

I didn’t charge my phone/power bank overnight so some delay whilst I waited for them to charge.

Made my way to Belvedere Palace to see some art. There is a permanent collection in Upper Belvedere that is well worth a visit and I enjoyed very much.

Lots of Klimt (including The Kiss), some Monet and lots more. Very enjoyable.

Sachertorte

I was not too bothered about sachertorte – I thought I’d had it before and thought it very sweet. However, following people’s recommendations I decided to have some in a coffee house today. It’s not my style to go for expensive stuff all the time but today I did go to the Sacher Hotel and have it there – the original place and the most expensive!

Instead of queuing for the cafe, I was invited immediately into the Salon – a kind of art deco style small tea room.

Turns out sachertorte is not too sweet and has apricot preserve in between the layers to add some tang. I loved it!

Pricey though!! I had a slice of Sacher torte and a melange coffee – it came to EU15.80!!

Buschenschank

I am writing this from halfway down Kahlenburg- a local hill just out of the city. I took the bus up (after visiting the Sacher Hotel) and am walking down stopping at vineyards on the way to taste their latest vintages. These pop up places are called ‘buschenschank’. Some are very temporary and others are brick buildings. It’s great!

This is one of the times when I would really like to have a partner in crime!

Whenever I get fed up, I can walk back to the bus route and hop back on the bus!

Dalilah (from the night train) gave me this tip. She has been the source of so many good tips – I hope she reads this so she knows!

After a couple of drinks and reading, chilling I decided to walk to the bottom. This was not hard and got me a few extra steps for the day. Bus 5B straight back to Prater 💪💪.

To get to the top of Kahlenburg, I first rode the D Tram to Grinziger Strasse. Then swapped to the 38A bus up to the top of the hill. The view at the top is great but pics don’t seem to reflect that. You’ll just have to go look yourself!

Finally – my capsule bed – a closer look – I’ve enjoyed this!

Now to get ready for Bratislava tomorrow. Vienna has been so good, I hope I haven’t peaked too early!!

  1. Glad you enjoyed Vienna Rachel, I was happy to help 🙂

Looks so great, I also got some new tips from your blog now. I know about Griechenbeisl and Porgy&Bess but haven’t been there yet. Definitely will check them out!
